Being able to play every chord in every key is essential. Practicing the circle 4th allows you to jump around in increments of fourths and fifths. This is better than a more simplistic approach moving up a chromatic scale as most songs do not move in that type of chord progression. Practicing jumping back a forth and up a fifth equips you for playing standard chord progressions.
